Our journey is deeply rooted in nature, just like the name itself.
A•BANI, derived from the Garo language meaning 'Of the Farm,' and from Sanskrit meaning 'Earth,' epitomizes our strong connection with both the land and the farming community of Meghalaya. At the heart of A•BANI lies a profound appreciation for the unsung heroes - our FARMERS, who are closest to Nature and the source of our organic produce. We are committed to empowering the farmers' community, especially those in remote villages, whose livelihoods revolve around their produce sold in markets.
Our Story
A•BANI
A•BANI is more than an initiative—it is a movement to uplift communities, transform rural livelihoods, and bring the richness of North East India to the world.
Our journey began with a simple yet powerful vision: no farmer should lose the value of their harvest simply because there is no market for it. We set out to create meaningful market linkages for farmers, reduce wastage of fresh farm produce, and ensure that those who grow our food receive a fair and dignified return for their efforts.
Initiated by Major Ajit Singh (Retd.), a Kargil War veteran, Ashoka Fellow and Veteran Achiever Awardee, A•BANI began in a small village in Meghalaya with the belief that sustainable development must begin at the grassroots.
Today, A•BANI works to build an ecosystem that connects farmers, communities, enterprises and markets. By supporting local agro-businesses, strengthening farmer collectives, encouraging sustainable agricultural practices and creating new market opportunities, we strive to generate rural, resilient and sustainable livelihoods.
At the heart of our work is a deep respect for the relationship between people, agriculture and nature. We believe that the traditional knowledge, indigenous crops, honest farm produce, craftsmanship and cultural heritage of North East India have immense value—not only for the communities that preserve them, but for India and the world.
Through A•BANI, we aspire to take these stories, products and practices from the farms and communities of the North East to the national and global stage, while ensuring that the communities behind them remain at the centre of the journey.
Our vision is simple: create markets that create livelihoods, preserve what is precious, and build a future where farmers, communities and nature can thrive together.
