01  The Land

Your journey to explore this beautiful region of our country begins with the land itself. The rich mountains of Arunachal Pradesh, the rivers of Assam, especially the mighty Brahmaputra, the hills of Meghalaya, the valleys of Manipur, the rolling landscapes of Mizoram, the colourful hills of Nagaland, the rich cultural heritage of Tripura and the Himalayan beauty of Sikkim have been beautifully woven into a land like no other. But what connects them all is tradition, the people and the beautiful relationship between them and their surroundings.

02  A Taste of the Land

Perhaps one of the easiest ways to discover the Northeast is through its food. Here, a meal is not simply something one eats; it is a true reflection of the land and the people who prepare it. In Assam, local food such as khar, tenga and pithas,

along with Assam tea, represents the traditional tastes and preferences of the people. As one travels towards Nagaland, one finds local food that combines fermented products with rice, vegetables and meat in traditional dishes. Axone, a fermented soybean, is a staple of Naga cooking. In Manipur, local herbs, vegetables, rice and fermented products create flavours unique to the land, while Meghalaya has its own comfort food made with local ingredients.

Arunachal Pradesh, on the other hand, is a land of ethnic communities whose cuisines are rich in rice, vegetables, herbs and local ingredients. Mizoram has a culinary culture that is a fascinating blend of the state’s natural hill habitat and the traditional use of rice, vegetables, herbs and meat. Tripura uses local ingredients and traditional preparation techniques that bring unique tastes and textures to its food, while Sikkim has its own share of Himalayan favourites such as momos and thukpa.

“Across the region, food tells a story that perhaps no guidebook can.”

03  Crafts and Living Traditions

While much of the cultural legacy of the Northeast lives through its food, it also finds expression in exquisite traditional crafts. The beautiful Naga weaving traditions, the silks and handlooms of Assam and Manipur, the cane and bamboo work found across several states and the exquisite weaving traditions of Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh represent the creative skill carried forward by generations of

craftsmen from the region. Meghalaya also takes pride in its unique living root bridges, a fascinating example of how the natural landscape of the region has contributed to the traditional lifestyles and crafts of local communities. Arunachal Pradesh, with its traditional houses, clothes and handicrafts, reflects the beautiful diversity of its ethnic communities. Sikkim’s traditional architecture, handicrafts and Himalayan culture add yet another unique dimension to the traditions of the Northeast.

04  Adventures Await

So, do these eight states also offer unique adventures? The answer is yes. The Northeast offers a wide set of experiences: exploring an Assam tea garden, walking among the clouds of Meghalaya, trekking through the pristine hills of Arunachal Pradesh, discovering the cultural life of Imphal in Manipur, observing the vibrant traditions of Nagaland, touring the peaceful hills of Mizoram and discovering the rich cultural treasures of Tripura and the Himalayan ranges of Sikkim.

05  Where Beauty Waits

The Northeast is a place where beauty does not shout for attention but waits for you to come, explore and be amazed. Each state has its own pace, every community its own traditions and stories, every home its own local delicacies, every land a story and every craft a history. Together they make one Northeast, its heritage handed down through generations.

“You do not really come here to capture it all on camera. You taste the land through its food and tea, observe its traditional craftwork, explore its forests and fields, and carry its stories away with you.”

THE LEGACY

Northeast India lives through its homes, handlooms, homely meals, forests, fields, stories and traditions. And here is the magic of the eight states of India’s Northeast: a region that keeps its legacy alive not just in museums but in homes, local markets, communities and beyond. At the core of this legacy is the incredible cultural diversity that the people of the region have practised and preserved for centuries.
